Transfer of Military Lands.

General Officer Commanding the Forces in China.

Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, London.

Headquarters,

Hongkong, 14ta April, 1924.

With reference to the attached copy of a letter

from His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong dated 28th March,

1924, I have the honour to report that I have agreed to the

handing over to the Colonial Government the sites of the

disused Elliot and Fly Point Batteries, Hongkong Island.

These sites were valued inßir John Oakley's

Supplementary Award at the sum of $76,530.

The ground is required by the University of Hong

Kong, who desires to start building forthwith.

His Excellency the Governor has suggested in a

despatch dated 17th March, 1924, that this land should be

handed over as a free gift to the University.

The transfer of the land to the Colonial Government

is being made on the understanding that if the above suggestion

of free gift to the University is not adopted the sum of $76,580 will be placed by the Colonial Government to the credit

of the Kilitary lands accounts.

The University of Hongkong takes in students from all over China, and their education is carried out on British

ideas. It is an institution which increases Britis

Influence in China, and themaking of fant of this land for the University is recommended for favourable consideration.

I have etc..

(3d). J. S. Fowler,

Major-General

Commanding the Forces in China.
